With the transfer window closing in some couple of hours, Newcastle are prepared to sell Moussa Sissoko to Tottenham for £30m.
But it is understood Tottenham are unlikely to pay such a high price, regardless of installments, and have now cooled their interest in the player.
The 27-year-old has wanted to leave Newcastle all summer after starring in France’s route to the Euro 2016 final.
Spurs are expected to complete the signings of winger Georges-Kevin N’Koudou and young goalkeeper Pau Lopez on Deadline Day, but they have also been considering attacking-midfield players after missing out on Wilfried Zaha.
And they have opted to move for Sissoko, who was superb for France as they reached the Euro 2016 final, where they lost to Portugal.
After the tournament, Sissoko told French website Foot Mercato in June that he wanted to join a team in the Champions League and described Spurs’ rivals Arsenal as “beautiful”.
Sissoko said: “I gave everything there for three-and-a-half years. I hope that they will be smart enough to understand that, to continue my development, I need to keep playing at the highest level.
“I want to continue my career in England, at a club that plays in the Champions League because I think this best fits my style of play.”
