The town hall meeting which held at Le Meridian Hotel, Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital on Monday, Almost ended in a fracas but the immediate intervention of the security operative avoided it from escalating.
Ibe Kachikwu, The Minister of Petroleum Resources assured the people of the Niger-Delta that he will fight against the Maritime University Okerenkoko, Delta State from being scrapped or relocated. Kachikwu made this known while sensitizing the people on policies of the government in the last one year. In responds to a question on Maritime University , He promised to oppose the position of the Minister of Transport and Former Governor of Rivers State who gave order. He said: “As far as it is about development in Niger Delta, I will pursue it, if Amaechi continues to refuse it as Maritime University; I will take it up as Petroleum University.”
Amaechi, while addressing the senate committee on marine transport on Jan. 20, 2016 threatened to scrap the Nigerian Maritime University project started by the immediate past administration of Goodluck Jonathan, stressing that it is “a waste of resources.” The Nigerian Maritime University project was started by Jonathan to quicken the development of human capacity to take over the cabotage trade “in the very near future.
Meanwhile, Immediately the representatives of National Association of Nigerian Student (NAN), South-south zone was given the microphone, the students began chanting songs of solidarity. some angry youths believed to be students in Akwa Ibom State stormed and disrupted the meeting, expressing their displeasure at the President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.
Other Representatives of the Federal Government at the meeting,were Lai Mohammed, Amina Mohammed and Rotimi Amaechi, who are respectively Ministers of Information, Environment and Transportation,were attacked by the angry students.
Security operatives were immediately called in to calm the students and bring the situation under control. Nigerian Times.
