The early hours of yesterday was filled with tension in Anambra and Imo State, as members of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, mounted road blocks and set bonfire in Nkpor and Onitsha causing the roads to be deserted. in Imo State they moved from Waterside Primary School, Owerri to Rotibi Street to Oguamana Street before linking Douglas Road. The police arrested some 20 members of the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) for holding a road show in commemoration of 49th anniversary of Biafra. The Police Public Relations Officer, Andrew Enwerem, who confirmed the arrests, said those arrested were rounded up around Tetlow Street by Okigwe road at about 11AM where they were said to be gathering to storm the city metropolis and they would be prosecuted. The Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Mr Hassan Karma says, the suspected members of MASSOB gathered at a school in Nkpor with identifying flags emblazoned with the rising sun symbols and charms but with mission unknown. He said that the Joint Security Operation, is moving into ascertain their mission, the group opened fire on them but the situation was later brought under control as the group fled and two people were arrested among them.
While assuring the people of Anambra state to remain calm The Commissioner stated that proactive measures were on cause to bring the situation under control, he advised that all residents should embrace peace and not infringe on other people’s freedom while agitating for their own freedom. Vanguard: An eyewitness who spoke off camera said that it was the security agencies that first disrupted the peaceful protest of the group at Nkpor when they were marching to commemorate the one year in memoriam of the victims of the struggle for freedom.
The same incident also happened, in Asaba, the Delta State capital, as several people were injured during planned protest by members of the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) degenerated into a fight. The MASSOB members had planned peaceful protests across south eastern states to mark 49 years of the agitation for Biafra Republic (1967 to 2016), on Monday. But fight reportedly broke out when Police tried to disperse the protesters by firing teargas at them which infuriated the protesters who allegedly reacted angrily and this degenerated into a larger fracas led to the death of two policemen.
According to Vanguard a witnesses said some persons, including policemen, injured in the fracas, were taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Asaba. A nurse at the hospital also confirmed that some of the injured were brought to the hospital. A witness, Uche Okelue, said the fracas broke out after a police team threw teargas at the marchers in an effort to disperse them.Another witness, Ben Onwordi, said another clash occurred between the police and MASSOB members at the popular Mammy Market Junction on Nnebisi Road, Asaba. Members of MASSOB in anger damaged the police patrol vehicle, vandalising the windscreen and doors before all of them fled into different directions.This peaceful protest also came as a result of the recent attacks by fulani herdsmen.
