Aston Villa are set to lose captain Fabian Delph following a remarkable double U-turn from the midfielder, who is now undergoing a medical with Manchester City, according to fillers getting to Cheznews sports desk. .
City were lining up a £8million bid last week to trigger the England international’s release clause, with Delph reportedly seen as a cut-price alternative to Juventus star Paul Pogba.
The Villa skipper publicly turned down the move, however, and insisted he would stay at the Midlands club this season.
“I want to set the record straight…I’m not leaving,” a statement on Saturday, which was accompanied by a picture of him pointing to the captain’s armband, reads.
“I’m staying at the football club and I can’t wait for the start of the season and captaining this great football club.”
But, just six days after committing his future to Aston Villa, Delph has changed his mind again and the move is back ON.
Reports have suggested he was initially put off the move by the prospect of playing understudy to Pogba who was, at that point, thought to be close to an Etihad Stadium switch.
But with Juventus insisting the French star was not for sale, plus more claims that Christian Benteke is set to leave Villa for Liverpool in the coming days, Delph decided to pursue a move to the two-time Premier League champions.
Pictures emerged on Friday appearing to capture the 25-year-old entering the same medical facility Raheem Sterling was photographed outside ahead of his £49million switch from Liverpool.
It is been clarified that he is indeed having a medical with Manchester City, with the midfielder set to sign exactly the same deal he turned down six days previously.
With this development and the expected exit of Benteke, Tim Sherwood will be bracing himself for a tumultuous season when the EPL starts, unless he fortifies his squad as expected.
