Hurray!!! sports loving people, welcome to Cheznews sports column.
Today we kick off with a new twist in the sports commentary.
Last week in the sports world was a week load of activity all around the globe from Australia to France to Berlin to Canada to Chile and Africa.
There was never really a dull moment for sports enthusiasts. It was a successful tale for some fans while a lot of others swelled with grief and pain as the week went by.
In this week, of “What If”, we are going to analyze the week sport events and find out what could have happened if some things were done to alter the final outcome.
FIFA president resigns.
Zurich happen to be the first to welcome us. On June 2nd, Sepp Blatter resigned as the FIFA president after 17 years incharge just three days after been re-elected. The reason? He was labelled to be running a corrupt laden administration, with most of his executives fingered bribe scandals.
We are asking, “What if Mr. Sepp Blatter refused to step down, insisting on completing his tenure”?
What if the Russians and UAE (Qatar precisely) decide to pull out of the association if the Swiss man quits? Will this actions have had any effect in the Football body today or will things have gone on like nothing happened?
Truth is, Mr Blatter has contributed a lot to football development around the world, bringing the World cup to Africa was a huge plus to the guy’s CV and his effort to expand the sport to the middle east is a necessity in the sports world.
But, it seems like the table was meant to turn against him on June 2nd, Hasta la vista Mr. Football.
Rodgers remain as Liverpool coach.
On the same day, Liverpool top hierarchy confirmed that Brendan Rodgers will be staying put as the club manager.
This information didn’t really sink down well with lot of Liverpool fans who were clamouring for change. Rodgers took over the mantle of management in 2012 and ever since then the Merseyside are yet to clinch a trophy, the closest they came to achieving glory was in 2013/2014 when they nearly won the EPL title but Gerard’s costly mistake against Chelsea denied them the opportunity. Since then, the club have been nothing short of average. “What if he had been fired and a new coach, maybe Jurgen Klopp, Slaven Bilic or Sinisa Mihajlovic pressured to take over, would it have been a better choice?
Wawrinka halts Federer’s dream.
We took off to France, the Roland Garros or French Open was at its near climax, Swiss Stan Wawrinka defeated compatriot Roger Federer in the quarter-finals of the competition 6-3, 6-4, 7-6. The former champion couldn’t handle Wawrinka’s moves and even though he tried in the third game to change the scoreline, the young Stan became the eventual winner.
What if Federer had turned the game in the 2nd game and gone ahead to win, would he have been a lesser torment for Djokovic in the finals?
Wawrinka displayed pure athleticism in running after every shot and putting an end to Roger’s hope to accumulating more title.
In the female side, Czech tennis player, 13th seeded Lucie Safarova created history, becoming the 1st woman to reach the French Open finals in 34 years beating Ana Ivanovic 7-5, 7-5 in the semi-final.
What if, Ana Ivanovic had won and halted the Czech player’s dreams, would she have given Serena a harder fight in the finals.
Serena won Lucie Safarova 6-3, 6-7, 6-2 in the finals to claim her 20th Grand Slam title.
Real Madrid appoints Benitez as coach.
Spain called and we bailed off to the city of “Galaticos”. Bernabeu was our drop point and we just met Rafa Benitez signing the dotted line as Real Madrid new coach.
Benitez was formerly at Napoli where the Naple side ended 5th on the Serie A table, but Florentino Perez felt the former Valencia and Liverpool coach is competent enough to do the job.
What if, Madrid had made a different decision in chosing a different coach to manage the Madrid side, would it have been a better decision for the Galaticos considering the fact that they were trophyless last season?
Will Benitez solve the issue lingering in the club bearing in mind that Barcelona are in the form of their life winning every trophy within their grasp?
Will Benitez be a suitable match for Luis Enrique side that conquered Europe and crowned best side in the La Liga, how will he cope with the dangerous triad formation of Lionel Messi, Luis Surez and Neymar?
What if Madrid had allowed Carlo Ancelotti to remain? Would he hve been able to do a better job next season?
FAI admits giving FIFA bribe.
The Irish breeze blew and we knew instantly that Ireland beckons, the Football Association of Ireland (FAI)claimed that FIFA gave them a 5million Euros bribe to allow Thierry Henry’s handball inspired goal to stand, and thereby allowing France to qualify for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
What If FIFA had not made the payement, would the court, which the FAI threatened to take the matter to, affected the outcome?
What effect would Ireland have had in South Africa if they had made it at the end of the day ( France didn’t go beyond the group stage).
FIFA denied giving the Irish FA bribe but insisted it was a loan given to the association to help build their stadium.
Gatlin topples Usain Bolt 100m record.
In Rome, Justin Gatlin ran the race of his life shaving off a second of Jamaican Usain Bolt 100m record of 9.76seconds.
The American did his in 9.75 seconds at the Diamond League meeting in Rome.
What if Usain Bolt ran with the American, would the record have stood?
Would the pressure be more on the American to defeat him than setting a new world recod?
Would Bolt have allowed the American to humiliate him and his record?
Felipe Luiz to leave the Blues.
Chelsea left-back Felipe Luiz has indicated interest in leaving the London side after been on the bench for most of the season. The former Atletico Madrid player won the Premier League title with the Blues and Carling Cup but wants more action than trophy.
What if Felipe Luiz leaves the London side, will he be able to replicate the form that made him a hot cake in Spain?
What if Chelsea refuse to sell as it most likely seem to be, will he be able to overtake Azpilicueta in that position?
Barcelona crowned king of Europe:
What if Giorgio Chiellini had played? Would Suarez have had the chance of pouncing on that rebound?
What if Juventus had more youthful squad like their Spanish opponents, would they have won the UEFA Champions League trophy?
What if Allegri had used a more congestive formation or parked the bus and wait on Barca to falter and gain on counter, would they have beaten Luis Enrique side in Berlin?
What if Ivan Rakitic hadn’t scored as early as the fourth minute, would Juventus have had the chance of playing their game and won?
Tiger Woods played the worst game of his career.
What if Tiger Woods hadn’t fired his swing coach some years back, would he have been a better player than what he is now?
What if he was still married to his model wife, would he have been a better player?
Mo Farah pulls out of Birmingham Marathon Race.
Mo Farah pulls out of Birmingham race after been psychologically and emotionally exhausted following the doping allegation leveled against his trainer Alberto Salazar.
What if Farah had not pulled out , what effect could it have had?
Would Farah have won the race or would his presence not have mattered?
Wawrinka finally subdues Djokovic.
The Swiss inrernational won Djokovic to claim the French Open trophy in France.
What if Djokovic had won the 2nd set as he did with the 1st set and finally the 3rd?
What if Wawrinka hadnt changed his game tactics in the 2nd set, would he have been able to defeat the Serb?
What if he had met Rafael Nadal in the finals, would he have been able to beat the king of clay?
Hamilton wins Canadian Grand prix.
The British champion shrugged aside the Monaco mistake to win the Canadian Formula 1 race competition and also inmprove on his driver points ahead of second placed Nico Rosberg.
What if within the last lap Nico Rosberg had overtaken him?
What if Rosberg had done more than what he already did, would he have overtaken Hamilton and won and overtake him driver’s standing?
Lots of results could have changed and destinies altered if the events had played the other way round, but this is the fun and essence of sports, enjoy the moment while it lasts.
