A WEEK LIKE NEVER BEFORE..
My couch, I can spend a whole week analyzing sports data and getting sport informations from my friendly couch. But, last weekend, I did something totally different, I decided to compile a tale of how last week went by, in vivid image, from my big brown couch.
It was a week filled with so much activity, hype and fan fare. It seemed like every angle I switched my interest to, there seem to be a reverberating sporting activity going on, from Italy to Germany to Las Vegas to Stamford Bridge to Spain, all the way to Lagos, there was something for every sport loving fan, the world was just busy.
It’s not just the activity that reeks with tempting interest, its the adrenalin rush that comes with it.
My first trip took me to Estadio Nuevo Arcangel, Spain, where Barcelona went on a scoring rout against relegation bound Cordoba, as the teams filed out from the dug out, I hadn’t the slightest premonition of what was to happen.
By the time the referee blew the final whistle at the full 90 minutes, the scoreline was humiliating, Barcelona 8 – 0 Cordoba, Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez banged in a hat trick, Lionel Messi and Neymar both got braces whole Pique got his name on the scoresheet, and I was breathlessly blown away with the beautiful display of football from the Catalans.
I took a brief stop at Lagos, Nigeria, where the U15 team from GSS Owerri conquered the nation and went home with the Etisalat U15 School Cup, young talent was at display in its raw form, the sight gave me the faith that there is still hope for Nigerian football.
Italy, the land of the Romans was the next place I got to and as I stepped out to savour the scented Venetian air, the wild roar from Turin got me, I turned to find out, Lo and behold! Juventus has just won the Italian Serie A title for the fourth consecutive time, an Arturo Vidal goal against Sampdoria was enough to hand the “Old Lady” its fourth Scudetto title. The emotions and celebration was extraordinary, Massimiliano Allegri’s men have conquered Italy for a record fourth time and are also contending for the UEFA Champions League trophy, a feat that tells the tale that Italian football is on the quest to get back to where they were 10 years ago.
The whole scenery was trying to settle in when I got the buzz from a little desert town in United States of America, Las Vegas. It was really like never before, the glitz, the glamour, the buzz, the hype, it was absolutely something else, above all it came with a tag, it was called ” The Fight of the Century”.
I wasn’t going to miss it for anything. Tickets were sold out months before the fight, hotels were booked to the brim and the area was flooded with stars from all genre of entertainment, from movie stars to platinum selling music artistes to TV host superstars, I was dumbfounded.
I thought the buzz was at the loudest decibel, i thought wrong, when Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao took to the ring, the buzz was deafening, for 12 rounds, two of the best pound for pound boxers in the world held the world in suspense in the 200million dollar worth fight.
After the whole round, American Floyd Mayweather was declared winner by a panel of judges and his unbeaten record 48-0 stood, still. But the Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao has set a mark in the anals of boxing history in his own context.
The fun was just getting started when a call came in from Stamford Bridge, “Mourinho has done it again”. Chelsea are the English Premier League champions for the 5th time, five years after the last time they lifted the trophy. I got to the Bridge when the highlight of Hazard’s solitary goal was all the disciplined Blues side needed to seal the deal, fantastic from the England’s Players Player of the Year award winner.
Mourinho led his team on a 15 winning game streak losing only two games and keeping a 17 clean sheet, conceding only 27 goals and amassing 83 points with two matches left to be play, amazing.
The German city of Munich had its own flair to add to my week long of activity, Bayern Munich have been crowned the Bundesliga champion, again. They blew all the other teams apart with a mastery of football, they were simply the best by miles apart. Winning 24 matches, losing only three, scoring 77 goals and conceding 15 goals enroute the Bundesliga trophy.
By the time i got home to my friendly and ever-welcoming couch I was exhausted and delighted at the great week that I just lived through, and just couldn’t wait for another one.
